I wondered if the lack of purchase might have contributed to the gybe by making it more difficult for John to haul in the sheet but I suppose without some sort of purchase or shrouds a strong gust would have pulled the sheet from the hand and sent the sail forward of the mast. But on the third hand, once the wind got on the wrong side of the sail....
