That "strange conical tent" is very like the canvas bell tent that I had my first real camping experience in. When I was 9 my grandmother took me and my two younger brothers with her and a group of Girl Guides. My brothers and I shared a tent like that. I think they were military surplus and could hold five or six Guides and allow a Guider to stand up inside. They were not lightweight backpacking tents. They probably required an elephant or two to carry them.
