Hate to tell you this, John, but my job was as an editor in publishing. But you are quite right - no one person can pick up every typo in an article. We reckoned that you need a minimum of three people to pick up about 90% errors. To make that 99% you need 5 proof-readers, no kidding. You will never get 100%.
By the way, in case you are wondering, I would have happily proof-read 'Jibbooms' if I had been asked, so my money is where my mouth is. But it is still a good book, worth having.
