I would agree with Peter Ceresole that the S & A series, particularly WH, could be introduced at around age 8 or 9. Certainly with the 'dumbing down' of children's literature it may be an initial challenge to some at that age. One hopes that Ransome will whet their appetite for quality material. His work is so much more fresh, alive and just plain fun than the twaddle of the week that our libraries seem to feel compelled to stock. (eg. Dozens of copies of 'Goosebumps' and 'Barf-o-rama' series and one copy each of Ransome's series (except 2 copies of S & A) for a city of 100,000! Shameful.)
