It's very off topic but I would like to here the story of American micro breweries. When I was in San Fransisco in 1979 I could find nothing other than a rather amateurish attempt that tasted a bit like home brew. I was amazed to discover the range of bottled beers available when wwe toured the NW in the late 90s and last year, when I was in Colombus and New York, there seemed to be any amount of very drinkable draft beers about many made by regional brewers who didn't seem very "micro".
BTW the word "ale" seems to be an American usage. I know we talk of "pale ale" and "real ale" but to order a pint of ale would sound like an archaism to me. I'd order a pint of bitter, wheat beer or whatever, or specify the name of the beer in question.
So when and how did "ale" become popular in N America?
e-mail me on andrew.bolger@btopenworld.com if you feel it is too far off topic for the board.
Cheers... hic.. heac..hop..
