After watching a video tape of Cutthroat Island, I was again impressed
with most of the film. Great maps and ships, an outstanding villian,
scurvy pirates, and good period detail. Yet, the movie was not considered
a success here in the United States. It is now on some of the premium
cable tv channels and is listed with a two star,(fair), rating. I
suspect that this is because the general American public, unlike those
of us familiar with the "Terror of the Seas" and Missee Lee, is not ready
to accept a female pirate as the lead character in a swashbuckling
film.
The movie was filmed in Malta and presumably released in Europe
earlier than in the US, or maybe at the same time, (late 1996).
So, could anyone out there tell me how the movie was received elswhere
in the world? It is NOT my goal to do cultural comparisons here, I
am just wondering if any of you enjoyed the film too.
