I carry a lead line with the conventional marks, but I mark the anchor chain in what I take to be the conventional manner, using white paint. The reason for using white is that you may anchor in the dark!
at 5 fathoms - 5 links painted. At 10 fathoms, 10 links, at 15 fathoms, 15 links and so on until we come to the bitter end at 45 fathoms.
There is no point in having marks closer together than that. The marks need re-painting every year.
