The part of Lancashire which became part of Cumbria was, as Robert Dilley says, the Furness district. This was detached from the rest of Lancashire. You could not (except at low tide by crossing the treacherous sands of Morecambe Bay) travel by land between the two without passing through Westmorland.

(Well, to step up the pedantry again, if you had a particular aversion to Westmorland you could go a much longer way round via other counties. ;-) )
