As a half-way measure, why not get him listening to Gabriel Woolf's tapes? These are abridged but by himself and it is hard to spot the gaps! Gabriel is completely true to the text and is in fact a member of TARS himself. He undertakes one volume a year and I believe this year has completed the 9th out of the 12. At a literary weekend a few years ago, Gabriel read two fairly well-known passges and asked us to spot the 'cuts' - few did easily! My younger children when small were able to take advantage of a taste of AR in this way and very quickly moved onto the written world. While they are on sale via the TARS shop you can also get them from places like the Windermere Steamboat Museum.
