While I agree that AR is by no means a household name, I have met many folks who know of him and have read the books. Indeed, just last month, I was on a short hike with a pretty random group and two out of the five families had heard of the books and read them. Perhaps I travel in a certain set who are more likely to have read AR than the average US citizen, but I am quite surprised by the number of people I meet who have read AR. Of course, the topic rarely comes up in casual conversation, so I must assume that even more people have heard of the books than I know about.

As I have mentioned here before, I first came across the books when I was 12 and my family was spending a sabbatical year in Cambridge (UK). A visiting aunt gave me SA because, I think, she had seen the movie and knew my affinity for sailing.
