I don't know where idea that you picked eight books came from, the original posting in this branch of the thread specified the music requirement and the show was called Desert Island Discs.
It was just that the format included a request for the guest to specify ONE book (other than the Bible or Shakespeare, because too many people were picking them and it was boring) and one item to make life more bearable on the island.
