Kate, I think you are right about Bob Blackett dying in WWI. Robert Hill
and I were discussing this further by e-mail and WWI seems the right
answer given the age of the Amazons.

I think that discussing the background of the stories like this adds to
our enjoyment of them. As someone born in the US after WWII, I had to
think about why Bob Blackett might have died, then remember when WWI occured,
where that would have been the immediate assumption of someone older than
myself who grew up in Britian. All of these sorts of details are a part of
what makes the books seem so real.

A lot of the recent books that deal with different aspects of Arthur's
life, such as his ships and houses, and the reminesences of "those who
were there" like Pauline Marshall and Taqui and Brigit Altounyan, all
make the setting and times of the books come into clearer focus for
those of us who were not there, but wished we were!
