The best sleds these days in just about any condition are inflatable tubes. They go well on just about any surface, except very deep snow. And you can use them to float in the pond in summer.

Not only do they have a fairly small area contacting the ground, but they cushion the ride and let you get airborne without fear of having your spine compacted.

They do have a big drawback, though: Holes. You never have to worry about a sled-with-runners deflating.
