Peter, if I recall correctly Ed's complaint had to do with erudition in the context of using a foreign language (or at least it looked like a readily-recognised one) known to some but by no means all of the readers, thus apparently creating a sort of "superior" subclique of those who understood. Whether that's what was going on or not, I think that's what it looked like from the outside, and it felt like "outside." [And while it wasn't Ed's point, a lot of Americans are a bit sensitive to [the casual use of] Latin or French especially in quotation because we don't tend to get them in our education. But that's another thread.]
