I've never been to New Zealand but I've seen pictures of stunning
scenery (mainly on South Island) where one could imagine Ransome-type
adventures. And remember that Britain, though similar in size to
NZ, has many times the population, with lots of tawdry suburbs and
towns. And in the north of England there are, in addition to the
beautifulk areas and the cities, a lot of semi-urban industrial
areas, some of which combine the ugliest aspects of town and country.

Not that I don't want to welcome your visit! I'm sure you'll love
the Lake District. But if you want space to breathe, then avoid,
as a minimum, its eastern and central areas in August and the
second half of July!
