Interesting question - I had to do some thinking about it. Girls are more complex to write about I think, but at the same time (being or having been a girl myself) I don't have too much trouble with them. With boys I have to think about their motivation a lot more - the male of the species, especially the young male, being more direct if it matters to them.
I hesitate to comment that some of the young males don't actually think but as a parent I've found my son tended to leap into action before his brain engaged, although having done it he was sanguine about the consequences while his older sister thought her way through things before beginnign any action. However, she was also less inclined to suffer any consequences if her actions were unwise, something that lasted well into her late teens!.
I wrote a short novel about a 12 year old girl last year and found it an interesting exercise in deciding the hows, whys and wherefors of her actions. Her brother was a lot more straightforward!
