On the small lake where we have a cottage there is always one pair of nesting loons. This is only the second of our fifteen years in which a chick has successfully fledged. This weekend I was fortunate enough to observe its flying progress. Even the adult birds must make a couple of circles round the lake to gain the altitude needed to clear the trees but the young bird made at least ten circuits, gaining altltude when against the wind and losing it when flying with the wind before he or she settled back onto the water. I hope the progress continues because hard water is coming.
