And on the question of racism. Immigrants learning English as a second language are commonly taught RP. A native of this soil may understand Glaswegian or Mancunian. My wife, (taking the nearest example to hand!) can understand RP and, after an intensive course supplied by the BBC in the form of "East Enders", she can interpret Estuary, but she literally has no idea what anyone speaking Glaswegian or Scouse is on about! The BBC in espousing regional accents cuts these people out of its constituency. A giant step towards social and racial inclusiveness.
