Life vests: we did not become hot on life vests till the last 20 years before that we got away without life vests in Lake Macquarie, now even my redneck brother is a fanatic about it.
I have ne (old English for no) doubt that Peggy was safe rowing across the lake. She is a sensible girl and would have been taught to stay with the boat if it capsized. Even sitting on its bottom she would have been cold but probably ok. Better than walking in the snow.
