Yes, the BBC output is better than anything in the USA (it seems from your comments that it has not improved since I was there 10 years ago) but this does not put it beyond criticism. In recent years it has 'dumbed down', auidience numbers are now seen as an indicators of quality. Gone are the days when a quality programme was made knowing that it would only attract a small number of viewers or listeners. The various TV and radio channels are so desperate to atract attention that they will change the whole nature of their output - the current schedules on Radio 3 are a good example. Another is BBC 2, when it started it was more arts and current affairs orientated; now it is little different from BBC 1. The digital channel BBC 4 trys to be like the old BBC 2 but doesn't come close.

Unfortunately, it is not only the BBC. Channel 4 started out as a very radical TV channel but is now much the same as the rest. The only hope in this is Channel 5, what started as a low-brow channel (at least it admitted it and didn't pretend to be anything else) is begining to proudce some high quality factual programmes.

Sorry to go on, but the BBC and other broadcasters have for too long fallen back on the response to any criticism - ah but its worse in the USA.
