I was wondering if there's anything wrong with making a map or a mini-guide book showing where all the sites are today.

Don't you think that that's nicely covered by Roger Wardale's 'In Search of Swallows and Amazons'?

It's a charming and affectionate book with excellent illustrations of AR and Evgenia and the sites then and now, plus maps. I only came across it when we went to Windermere and Coniston to recce a decorative arts society trip to the Arts and Crafts houses in the area (wonderful stuff). It was for sale in Windermere so I bought it and have read it several times since. I couldn't imagine a better guide to relate the stories to the 'ground truth'.
