I did a scan across the twelve ASCII TEXT copies of Ransome's
beloved stories for the word, "piebald," and found these five
entries. Here, at least, is what he had to say about it...

PD CH7
There she was again, heading the wrong side of the buoy. Oh,
bother it, and now too far the other way! And there was Nancy
watching. This would never do. He must keep that piebald
chequered buoy just showing on her port bow.

PM CH17
The next moment there was someone in the doorway, wet and
piebald, in bathing things that glistened in the flickering light
of the lantern and the fire.

PP CH30
"It was pretty well evening when we st...arted," said Nancy,
using a black hand to cover a pink yawn in a piebald face.
"We'll have burnt all our charcoal by tonight... Ow... I'm not
sleepy, really."

SD CH7
Captain Flint, sitting among them in his flannel trousers and
white shirt, with his shirt sleeves rolled to the elbow, drinking
ginger beer out of the bottle and taking big bites out of
enormous sandwiches, looked like the solitary ship-wrecked
sailor in the middle of the lot of piebald, pigmy savages.

SW CH 7
"I'm coming," said Roger. He tugged mightily, left one boot in
the mud, then the other, sank to his knees, lost both socks, and
staggered ashore. He put up a dripping black hand to brush the
hair out of his eyes, and grinned at them, a sort of piebald
negro.
