No here I was thinking of the John in SA and SD. The stolen stuff from Racundra is so obvious once you read it - the tale of almost perishing on the river entrance and making it. The other boat that tried foundered. He is that John. The rowing in the morning to get the Later I agree John develops and is not the same - better as in SW. The John in SW is not the John of SA, AR has matured him as you say and developed the story.
