Thanks, Adam. There is no doubt that Ransome's (fictional) Crab
Island was based on E.F. Knight's (true) Trinidad Island. Since adding
the text of Knight's book to the Literary Pages, I've discovered that
Knight himself used Trinidad as part of the background to his one novel
"A Desperate Venture" (1896): his description of the island is very
similar to that in "The Cruise of the Alerte", and he finds a use for
the crabs far more macabre than anything in "Peter Duck"
