Good programme; of course the "loose ends" never can be tied up, in a programme of 30 minutes, but I was unaware of the odd circumstances of his childhood - his father dying of TB and he being forcibly separated from his mother at the age of six lest he catch it from her.

One of the oddities, to me, is that Childers could produce such a "professional" novel, with tight plotting, sharply drawn characters and realistic dialogue, on a first outing as a novelist, see it become best seller, yet have no interest (as it seems) in writing another.
