Actually I think AR had the idea for a plot in Racundra. He is telling a story and a good one. I think his style there develops into SA series allowing for the crossover into fiction. But he took stuff from the Racundra for the series and like all good authors he steals from himself. John is that sailing side of AR - AR may be more complex but in the sailing he comes across as a big John. Just as brash as liable to try things he shouldn't and at times bloody lucky to survive.
Other parts of him may be Dick and I will read wider to see, but in Racundra I see where he got John from.
Anyway I think so.
