There actually is a fun parlor game along similar lines. I forget its name, but it's played a bit like the game I know as "Dictionary" (the game where you are given a word and then everyone makes up a definition, with the person who picked the word adding the real definition to the mix; you then vote on what you think is the best response).

The game I have in mind has cards with the first and last sentences of a well-known book. You are given the name of the book, which sentence to emulate, and then players submit their ideas. The person whose "turn" it is adds the real sentence to the pile and reads them all, with people voting on the results. You get points for guessing the right answer as well as any votes your offering received. You could certainly turn the game on its head and have everyone submit a sentence that would end the book before it started.
