"I am posting this message on behalf of Jeremy Gibson who many of you will know.

Jeremy wishes us to be aware of a First Edition of S&A which is to be
auctioned in Swindon on Thursday, 11th December. Jeremy will be
attending the sale and has offered to bid on behalf of anyone who is
interested.

I will give below the details as provided to me by Jeremy:

Dominic Winter Book Auctions
The Old School, Maxwell Street, Swindon, Wilts. SN1 5DR
Tel. 01793 611340 Fax 01793 491727
Auction of Children's and Illustrated Books, Modern First Editions.

The Catalogue entry for Lot 475 is:

1st ed., Jonathan Cape, 1930, mapfrontis. and map endpapers, a.e.g., fine
recent grey/blue vellucent binding by Cottage Bindery, Bath, with large
rect. panel to each cover reproducing the map endpapers, each within
decorative gilt border, gilt dec. spine, with raised banks, slipcase with
remains of orig. cloth binding laid on, 8vo.

£1,500-£2,000

Then follows a note on Vellucent Binding:

A method of decorating (and protecting) a bookbinding utilising
transparent vellum. The technique was developed by Cedric Chivers (1853-
1929) of Bath, some time around 1903, and is designed not only for the
protection of leather bindings, but also to protect covers bearing
coloured designs (usually pictorial in nature) painted on paper, attached
to the boards and then covered with the vellum.

The cover (open) is illustrated in the catalogue and is, essentially, the
map front and endpapers with a fancy gilt detailed binding.

If anyone is interested, do please either contact Jeremy direct (he is
not on email) or send me an email message and I will ensure it is passed
on.

Thank you.

Margaret Ratcliffe"
