Chapter 2 Feeling Her Way In

Said Capt Flint to John..."You watch your steering".
"West" said John.

"Stop her", called Capt Flint..."Hard a Starboard!"
"Starboard" repeated John, putting the tiller over. (Now facing north)

BUT!

Dick could see small flecks of foam moving slowly past her as she swung. (To what heading, the last wind mentioned was North West).

But of course!

Chapter 3 Putting Her On Legs

The north side of the cove, towards which they were moving... Looking astern, he saw a line of rocks, rising into a promontory that divided the cove from another to the south of it... "Just ticking over", said Capt Flint. "No need to ram her ashore."

Richards memory is correct the starboard side was facing east. If you read on you'll find that all this "leg work" was done before breakfast and that scrubbing was done before lunch. The sun would have still been on the east.
