An interesting question! Ive done a bit of sailing on Coniston, Windermere and The Broads and can only suggest that the Broads didnt NEED changing, that the geography was right for the books (with the exception of the Roaring Donkey).
Can I suggest that because Ransome stayed on land in different parts of the Lakes, he found locations that he wanted to use but were inconveniently located. The Broads is more of a continuum in water terms, and I believe he spent most of his visits there afloat. Thus his concepts developed within that continuum.
Just a thought, anyone got any evidence!
