I read Coral Island at age c.8, (brutal killing, cannibalism, etc). The only deaths that really disturbed me were those of the cat and the sea creatures in Ralph's pool. Possibly because those kind of deaths were within my life experience. (OK I didn't go around drowning cats - but you know what I mean)
