I have resisted this thread so far but... I agree with Robert here 'but I do not consider the former incorrect...' If you read Fowler (even the modern revised versions) the variants between various forms of English are presented as that - variants. Of course there are some things that are just plain wrong, but many English people get very worked up about things that if they looked in Fowler they would find were actually correct!
