A bright sunny day reflecting off the foot of snow here in Marquette, Michigan, on the shores of Lake Superior... the only lake on Earth which matches the imaginations of the S & A's in size!

Just before Christmas, we were in Geneva, by the lake. Not the size of Superior (about 100 kms long but narrow with it), no snow, but otherwise the full schtick; mountains, like real ones, either side. Kanchenjunga/Mont Blanc at 15,000 ft (that's 5000 metres in real money) looming from 80 kms away.

Funnily enough, although I've spend almost every summer since 1945 there, and absorbed the Ransome books from that age, I've never associated the lake in Geneva in any way with AR. Windermere is quintessentially English, in the best possible way, and also in the best possible way the lake at Geneva is Swiss. No confusion possible, even emotionally. I suppose it could be all those conifers instead of the bushy-tops that are so characteristic of the Lakeland scenery. And the feature of the local Swiss houses is great overhanging eaves with broken-ended slopes, unlike the almost prim, neat slate roofs in England.

But Marquette sounds pretty good... Happy New Year to everyone!
