Here in the US/Canada in the '30s, downhill skiing was still very limited even in New England and Quebec, which just started tow ropes (usually an old Ford engine at the top of the mountain with a loop rope below) earlier in the decade. Was there much (any?) downhill skiing in Britain at that time?

But recreational cross-country skiing was well established in resort areas by the '30s over here, and I would guess in the Lakes Country as well. Perhaps it hadn't yet been embraced by Amazons and locals in SA's time?
