No, no, I don't mean the M6, which is a splendid drive. I mean the winding roads with the rock walls inches from the left side of the car. My wife was in a constant panic on her side and I was in a constant panic from the oncoming traffic on my side. It was a relief to leave the car parked outside the hotel and to take local buses. Incidentally, I drove from Windermere to Cheltenham along the M6 afterwards, and, averaging 65 mph, found the road as good or better than the highways in Canada. Things got a little confusing south of Cheltenham, but we arrived in Bournemouth in good time. Funny thing - when I was in England in 1976 we rented a car and drove all over the south - cart tracks and all - with no trouble at all. Well, I guess that's what age does to you. And, of course, it's a lot cheaper to go by bus.
