Just to make it three Toronto posts in a row for those who use the unthreaded version!

I agree with Harry's comments. I have often found series of books which appeal to me. The characters need more than one book to be explored and their lives rounded. However, it usually happens that after a while the author runs out of ideas and gets repetitive and the characters go from being fascinating to being tiresome. Arthur Ransome has managed to avoid this trap, partly by varying the settings and partly by introducing new characters. His plots too are usually a complete departure from the earlier books. Just part of the appeal of his series of books.
