Had she then tacked every time that John did she would have cleared the shallows off the point without difficulty and been able to sail free and fast for the finish. If John had tried splitting tacks then Amazon with her centreplate instead of the long straight keel would certainly have been able to tack faster and remain in the tacticaly better position.
