According to Bernard J. Sussman, an ASL etc expert,(complaints to him pls): "For letters, British hearing people used two hands (originally done with gloves having letters written on 1 hand, and pointing with the other hand)". When expert, discard the gloves.
American hearing-impaired people use a 1-handed system, where only 2-3 letters look like the printed version.
