Peter, what do you mean you are not allowed to talk about massive overcrowding? I would have thought that is one of the most noticeable things about the U.K. these days. When I revisited my home town of Poole, Dorset last summer it was awful. Cars, houses and people everywhere, whereas I remember it being quite empty and peaceful before. Perhaps if we expatriates talk about it, the stay-at-homes might pick up on it. Then, again, I suppose it's one of things such as not saying anything critical about the native Indians in Canada or the dangers of homosexual activity, etc.
P.S. for Prue. I too have fond memories of homemade jam or jelly. I remember those rare evenings at boarding-school in Wimborne when we had crabapple jelly. I still remember the rays of the evening sun glowing through that clear pale pink mixture in the jar just before we spread it on thin bread-and-butter. I have never forgotten the taste of that nectar. Kraft Foods markets some pale tasteless compound that bears as much relationship to real crabapple jelly as paraffin candles do to the beeswax variety. Well, that's my rant for the day.
