It is quite common here in Canada to find jam in tins (or cans, as we would say). It comes with a plastic lid that can be used once the can has been opened. Maybe clumsy people like cans better as less likely to break if dropped?

However, I doubt if plastic lids were available in AR's day and, as Peter H notes, modern coatings inside cans to make them safe for storage would have been lacking, too.

We had a TARBoard discussion some time back, initiated by my suggesting that the Fram jam would have frozen (not everyone agreed). Still, maybe that's why it was in tins -- and why lots of it in Canada is!
