I agree about the stock but other factors including wet feet(plant 'em on a little bed of sand) or too much fertiliser(mix it with some soil under the bed of sand so the tender roots don't come into contact with it) can result in blind bulbs - that is, all leaf and no flower! Also fresh compost doesn't agree with most bulbs although they just tend to rot rather than attempt to leaf.
I'd check my sources next year when buying but also look at my planting practises too. I'm sure it won't happen two years in a row.
BTW - jam still comes in tins here, as well as jars. You just decant it into a jam dish - very civilised!
