Prior to WW11 when Australia still made jams and preserves for export, the products were packed in tins probably to save weight, as someone wrote to be decanted later into jam dishes. The "catering packs" were actually packed in square tins like kerosene tins, 4 gallons at a time, (they must have been very heavy!!), honey was and still is packed in bulk this way. By the way, well tinned cans did not cause left over jam to go bad, today as they are varnished, I don't know!
