The Washington traffic circles were also, perhaps apocryphally, intended as artillery battery sites in the event of an assault, as they provided clear lines of fire in several directions at once.

Traffic circles in Rhode Island, notably on US 1, are legendary, with the unofficial state motto being "Don't yield 'til you see the whites of their eyes".

One I truly regret having missed was in Dartmouth, NS, the MicMac Rotary, which was a double traffic circle immortalized in a Scottish Country dance by the prolific John Drewry. It has, alas, been replaced by a massive cloverleaf construction. Undoubtedly more practical, but much less inspiring.
