Dick? Linux? Very likely. Remember in our time he'd have had access to the university IT department in the holidays.

Characters in books are only characters in books and they only live in our imaginations- which makes you think; Dick must have millions of individual lives. But I do wonder sometimes what he would have become. He would have been at an age to go to university just before the war started. With the others, the choices are more clearly drawn- John to the Navy, possibly in dark imaginings to serve on 'Hood' or 'Prince of Wales', Roger to the RAF- as of course he did, although there's nothing in the books to indicate that he would become famous as the pharmaceutical researcher who developed Intal. But Dick? The sky's the limit, via Bletchley Park or Worth Matravers, to steady work in some technical field, to some wartime adventure with a Wren in the blackout, leading to either by a happy family life or to disappointment and alcoholic oblivion. Any and all of those...

That's what is so wonderful about books...
