Here goes. Clasp your hands together, fingers tightly interlocked, forearms vertical, with your thumbs together and sticking straight up. Make your palms as hollow as you can, to give a reverberating area. Put the joints of your thumbs against your lips and blow fairly gently. Nothing will happen, apart from a hissing noise. Now experiment, moving your thumbs very slightly to different positions against your lips, and try blowing harder or softer. Sooner or later, you will get a very slight breathy whistle - stick with that position till you get a good clear hoot. Have patience. If anyone is going to the TARS IAGM at Edinburgh, I am willing to give hooting tuition, possibly during the Chairman's Report (only kidding)
