And above all else Wainwright's Guide Books, which will be a joy even after you get back. The final volume gives a list of his favourite peaks, walks, ridges etc. which really are the best.

I fear that the best places are well away from Coniston - round Ennerdale and Wasdale + Saddleback (or Blencathra). You have to go up Kanchenjunga (Coniston Old Man), but NOT by the tourist path.

Nothing extreme. These aren't the Grand Tetons. But they need a bit of respect nevertheless.
