As for that cross-stick catching fire over the open fire, that would greatly depend on whether the scraps of driftwood they were burning were put on the fire by Susan, or by Nancy. If the latter, that cross-stick would be deep within the heart of the flames.
I am not aware of Nancy's having built up a huge fire being an actual event recorded within these stories, but it seems that she has the reputation of liking the larger fires. Maybe someone will recall when she did actually do an oversize fire, but I cannot recall it - but then, what do I know...
