Those two paragraphs tell us so much but so little! Previous threads have discussed the whereabouts of Mr Blackett and so on, but reading these paragraphs so many questions come to mind. To me it seems AR is hinting at so much, for example "Mother's fairly letting herself go again," - as opposed to what? What is AR suggesting and what is it that Nancy (in modern terms a teenager) has noticed about her mother?
I realise I am going to be accused of reading too much into this, but it was this and other thoughts that sprang to mind as soon as I read it.
