Thans to Jeremy Kriewaldt, Ed Kiser and Geraint Lewis for the passages quoted about parents not being as strict as they were in earlier times. Yes, I remember those passages, but I still think there is a much stronger editorial intervention somewehre in one of the novels. AR interrupts his narrative to insert his opinion in quite a decisive fashion. Wish I could pinpont it. I'll probably have to reread the entire set to find it.
