My interest piqued by John's comment and Pam's reply regarding when rugby would be played, I started looking at such public schools as I could think of. The XVs play on these schedules:
Eton - Michaelmas Term
Harrow - Winter Term
Rubgby (of course) - Advent Term
Winchester - their own unique variant of football, so N/A
Oundle - Michaelmas, Christmas and Easter Terms (presumably the same team carrying through all, however, and no mention of rugby 7s or XVs)
Radley - Michaelmas
Several of these mention playing rugby 7s during the spring terms, but it appears that if these are representative, not too many schools would have been ruled out. Perhaps, John, you'd offer some counter-examples where John Walker wiould have missed a chance at the first XV by missing the start of the Spring/Easter term.
